The jury is out!! Which side of the fence do you sit on? Snowboarding has it is place as a style driven sport, and making a statement on the hill seems to be the way forward fro most riders. So the question remains, why spoil your look with a stupid helmet? The answer for me is clear, you will never see me riding without a in the right manner fitted snowboarding helmet!

It wasn’t always this way… when I learned to ride, for at least the original 3 weeks I was happy in my tea cosy beanie… I thought I looked the business with my Oakley shades (no goggles in sight) but then, as I was riding a bread and butter cat track amidst pistes, I caught an edge at an insanely slow speed and decently stacked it!

The snow was in gorgeous good condition, so my fall could have been much worse, but even so it still took a few minutes to work out where I was. When my head at last stopped spinning, I decisive right then and there that I necessitated a snowboarding helmet, so before the end of the day I was the proud owner of a chrome Uvex Helmet!

Again I thought I looked the part, but my mates just held drawing correspondings to Battlestar Galictica… something to do with a little resemblance to cylons, so I’m told:)

…anyway, this is one buy that has to go down as one of the best I have ever made. Even even though for two whole weeks I don’t think I fell over (I only employed to cruise), I started to think my buy was not making much sense, particularly as it started shedding it is nice chrome coating! Until one day that is, that while moving at speed I caught something lurking just beneath the snow, that flung me back on to the piste head first! According to eye witnesses I bounced twice off my head before landing on my back (and a poorly placed binding tool).

I scarcely managed to get to the lift station, and remained concussed for the rest of the day! I may only imagine what state my head would be in now if I had stuck to wearing my all time bestloved beanie, but one thing is for sure, it is snowboarding helmets all day long for this shredder!!

If you think with regards to it logically, what price is your health? Surely we must all be doing what we may to make sure we return home safely and in one piece, and who cares if we look like an alien from star wars, as long as we still get to go home at the end of the day!

A fellow instructor friend of mine recommends to his beginners to get a snowboarding helmet as soon as possible even though they are journeying slow, but just merely because somebody else may lose control at speed and take you with them! I’ve seen it happen.

My advice… Helmet Up!! Just make sure it fits properly, look out for that gap amidst your goggles and your helmet – if that happens it is unquestionably not cool!
